Can I get immediate insurance cover?

Does my insurance policy cover me abroad?

Most insurance policies now cover you, free of charge, to drive in any EEC country under that countries minimum insurance requirements. Please be aware that this Insurance cover is usually minimal. The equivalent cover in the UK would be THIRD PARTY ONLY. To obtain the equivalent insurance cover that you hold in the United Kingdom or insurance cover outside of the EEC, please call 0116 283 2049 for further details and additional charges.

Does my insurance policy cover me to drive other cars?

The driving other cars extension to your car insurance cover differs with each insurer and each individuals circumstances. If this Insurance cover is granted by a particular insurer, Insurance cover on the other vehicle is restricted to Third Party Only. To find out if you are entitled to this extension check your insurance certificate. Details will be shown on this under permissions. If still not sure please call 0116 283 2049.

What does No Claims Bonus mean?

No Claims Bonus represents the number of years which the Insurance proposer has held an insurance policy without making an Insurance claim or having an Insurance claim against you. Any No Claims Bonus you have earned can only be used on one insurance policy at any one time.

What is an Excess?

An excess is an amount you pay as a contribution to the first part of each and every Insurance claim made against your insurance policy for your own damage. Some excesses also require payment for damage to a third party. The two main types are :- compulsory excess. This is an excess imposed by the insurer. Instances of this type might be model of vehicle, drivers age, drivers driving experience.  The second type :- Voluntary excess. This is an agreed contribution you wish to make towards damage to your vehicle. Generally the higher the voluntary excess agreed, the cheaper your insurance premium becomes. A voluntary excess is always in addition to any Compulsory excess imposed. So, £100 voluntary with £150 compulsory gives a total excess applicable of £250.00.

I was previously driving a company car, does this count towards my own insurance?

Yes. Some insurers do allow a discount based on your company car experience. So 5 years claim free driving a company car they would allow 5 years no claims bonus in your own name.

What happens to my insurance if I have a disability or medical condition?

Certain medical conditions or disabilities that can affect your ability to drive must referred to the DVLA to find out more you can visit their website at dvla.gov.uk. These may have an impact on your insurance policy however, most insurers don't discriminate for medical conditions.

What do the different levels of insurance cover me for?

There are three different levels of Insurance cover available for motor insurance these being:

  • Third Party Insurance Only - This the most basic level of insurance cover available and covers you for third party death, third party injury and third party property damage.
  • Third Party Fire & Theft Insurance - This insurance covers all of the above plus fire, theft cover.
  • Comprehensive Insurance - This insurance covers both of the above plus accidental damage to your own vehicle, some insurance contents cover may be included. You may also be covered for personal injury (subject to insurance policy conditions), and glass cover.

What are classed as fault and none fault Insurance claims by insurers?

A none fault Insurance claim is an Insurance claim whereby your insurer is able to recover their costs from a third party. A fault claim is any claim whereby your insurers are unable to recover their costs from another party. Remember, you earn a NO CLAIMS bonus not a NO BLAME bonus and therefore even though you may feel you are not to blame e.g. THEFT of your vehicle, HIT AND RUN DRIVER these are still classed as a fault claim as your insurer maybe unable to recover their costs from anyone.

What is protected no claims Insurance bonus?

This is a additional extension to your Insurance policy whereby your insurer will allow you to make a certain number of fault claims in a set period without these claims affecting your no claims bonus.

What can I do to make my insurance premium cheaper?

The following criteria can all help to make it easier to obtain cheaper insurance:

1.    Adding a voluntary excess to your insurance policy

2.    Restricting the number and age of drivers included on your Insurance policy

3.    Adding a driver can reduce the premiums

4.    Adding security to your vehicle e.g. fitting a recognised immobiliser or alarm system

5. If you have access to a garage using it for your vehicle in cheaper insurance premiums plus terms.

Why did my no claims bonus go from 15 yrs to 2 yrs.

Every year you earn a no claims bonus. The majority of insurers go 1yr=30%,2yrs=40%,3yrs=50%,4yrs+=60% So,15 years would be 60%. When a fault claim is submitted and you don't have it protected you lose 20% no claims bonus. It used to be said you lose 2 years as all insurers just used to go to 60%. so, 60% representing 4 or 40 years goes to 40%. So it seems that someone with 15 years has been reduced to only 2 years, (40%).
